Helping the unfortunate victims of accidents, crimes and fires are jobs that require unusual bravery. The heroes who don the uniforms of the military and first responders risk their own lives to serve and protect the public and defend our freedoms. They courageously face preparatory steps such as weapons firing range practice and tower rescue training to selflessly come to the aid of those in need.
Iconic images of police officers, firefighters and military members tell only part of the story. There is an incredible array of different career paths within all these professions. Traditional roles still exist but unconventional and interesting jobs are also available for those considering the uniformed ranks.
Unusual Military Jobs
The long-standing tradition of military bands is still alive and well today. Approximately 100 different military-affiliated musical ensembles exist. These include active-duty, guard and reserve and privately supported organizations. Musicians in a uniform range from vocalists in the United States Army Chorale to bagpipe players in the United States Coast Guard Pipe Band.
Unusual Law Enforcement Jobs
Actively monitoring and enforcing international treaties is far from driving a patrol car and investigating crime scenes. Yet that’s exactly what members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Law Enforcement (NOAA OLE) do for a living. Officers in this organization are tasked with providing protection for threatened marine species and their habitats. Aside from domestic duties, NOAA OLE personnel also provide training to foreign governments to help them protect their own marine resources.
Unusual Firefighting Jobs
While not technically a firefighting position, fire stations often employ EMS personnel such as paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). It is the same world of sirens and fast-paced treatment for victims which is why firefighters often make the switch. Once qualified as an EMT other unusual career opportunities may appear. Some of these include event, cruise ship and theme park emergency medical services.
The world of military members and first responders offers more than just stereotypical roles for its members. A variety of opportunities exist in unconventional jobs for those in uniform. Finding unique opportunities is only a matter of open-mindedness, hard work and curiosity.
